Musician, Jupitar has stated that he is the only artiste in Ghana who does proper dancehall music.
His comment came on the back of assertions by some showbiz pundits and music lovers that his ‘Fire’ song which features Stonebwoy is not dancehall and therefore did not qualify to earn a nomination as the Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year in the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
The song has been nominated alongside ‘Serwaa Akoto’ by Blakk Rasta, ‘It’s So Crazy’ by De Voice, ‘Hold Me Now’ by MzVee, ‘Go Higher’ by Stonebwoy and ‘Holiday’ by AK Songstress
While panellists of Pluzz FM’s AM Pluzz were commenting on which of the songs did not deserve to be nominated, Jupitar’s ‘Fire’ was mentioned as one of them.
A message from Jupitar in reaction which was put out by the host, Sammy Flex, read, “I’m the only proper dancehall/reggae artiste in this country. So anything I release should be considered as dancehall or reggae music. Period!
Jupitar affirmed his claims when raised on phone. According to him, he is holding the fort than any other artiste. He argued that his song deserved the nomination because it is dancehall and did well the year under review.
“Sometimes, it’s not about the lyrics and content that qualifies it as dancehall or hip-hop,”he said.
Contrary to the claims, the producer of Jupitar’s ‘Fire’, Genius Selection, stated on the same platform that the song does not qualify to be categorised as dancehall.
“It doesn’t fall within the dancehall or reggae category. It has a Francophone feel. I will make a reference to the Magic System, ‘Amoulanga’” he noted.
